Short Circuit Coordination Study

Short Circuit Coordination Study

A protective device coordination study is designed to identify device settings on items such as circuit breakers and protective relays. The short circuit calculation settings are coordinated with other devices such as fuses and other equipment so that if there is a fault in your electrical system, the fault will be cleared in the minimum amount of time, and closest to the fault as possible. Typically circuit breakers and other protective devices are default set to a “minimum” level, so as to reduce the possibility of equipment damage and risk to human life, but you don't want nusiance tripping either.

The study is developed with actual real-world data on the equipment, so that recommendations for better reliability and reduced nuisance tripping will occur.  No one wants a small electrical fault to shut down an entire facility, yet safety and other factors are also considered.

Southwest Energy Systems, LLC has many years of electrical and engineering experience in performing electrical engineering studies.  Our field personnel are well versed in the latest requirements of the NFPA 70e for electrical safety in the work place, and provide accurate data to the engineer(s) performing the calculations.  We utilize three of the top software products, so no matter which software you prefer, we can usually accommodate your needs.
